Both routes reach the same people, so pick by urgency: the chat gets you a fast read on whether your situation fits, the form is better when you can paste in the details in one pass. Either way a placement advisor replies, not an autoresponder, and the first reply will tell you three things: whether your program self-sources, what a realistic sourcing window looks like for your specialty and state, and what to pull from your handbook next.

Five details from your program documents make the first conversation ten times more useful, and all of them live in your practicum handbook or degree plan:

• Your track and entry point, BSN-to-DNP or post-master's, and the specialty if you are on an NP track.
• Your post-baccalaureate hour total, and how much of it transfers if you hold a prior master's.
• The direct-care share your specialty enforces, versus project practice hours.
• Your practicum term start date, and any published application deadline, some schools close applications months ahead.
• Any site rules you already know, workplace restrictions, insurance minimums, or a required application system.

A term before your practicum starts is the right time, and earlier if your specialty is PMHNP, pediatrics or women's health, because sourcing time and your school's review time stack. Some programs publish hard application deadlines months ahead of the term, Walden's practicum applications, for example, are due roughly three months before the term begins and its review can run three months or longer, so a request that arrives with six weeks of runway is already fighting the calendar.

Reaching out early costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. If it turns out your school assists with placement, or your timeline is comfortable and your market is deep, the honest first reply may be that you don't need us yet, and that reply is free. What we can't do is compress a school's review queue, so the one mistake to avoid is waiting until the term is visible in the windshield.

If your practicum is already mid-term and a site just fell through, skip the checklist above and write immediately with your school, track, state and the hours you have left. Mid-term re-sourcing is time-critical and we treat it that way.
